Better Together joins A Community Thrives challenge through Aug. 12

FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 25, 2022) – Better Together, a nonprofit dedicated to helping families in crisis and preventing the need for foster care, has been selected as a participant in the A Community Thrives campaign, a grantmaking and crowdfunding program funded by the Gannett Foundation, which supports community-building initiatives across the country.

Donations made through A Community Thrives to Better Together count toward the organization’s $25,000 fundraising goal and help put Better Together in the running for a $100,000 grant. The community can help Better Together qualify for the grant by donating through Aug. 12 at ACommunityThrives.MightyCause.com/Organization/BetterTogether.

Better Together is made up of two programs – Better Families and Better Jobs – that help parents who are going through a hard time to keep their kids out of foster care, find work and address the root causes of their struggle so that they can reunite as a family with the tools and support system to thrive. To date, Better Together has served over 3,800 children and kept 98% of families together, while helping nearly 38,000 job seekers find employment through church-based job fairs across 26 states.

“We are in overwhelming times, and with inflation and housing costs rising, the need is growing. We have a growing wait list for parents seeking a family mentor, and we must rise to the occasion,” said Megan Rose, CEO of Better Together. “Parents should not lose their children because they have money problems, or had the courage to seek treatment, or got hospitalized without child care. All these challenges can be overcome—while keeping children safe—with the right support system in place. With the community’s help, we can recruit and train more volunteers and in turn help more families.”

When parents fall into crisis, fully screened and trained volunteers host children in their homes while mentoring parents toward stability. This includes help with finding a job, securing housing, childcare, treatment and more. The Better Families program is voluntary, and parents never lose legal custody of their children. The nonprofit’s Better Jobs program was created to address the 76% of families that come to Better Together because of economic hardship tied to unemployment. The program offers support through job fairs and job coaching services, as well as guidance and encouragement through local church and community partners.
