Search Has Changed: A 10-Point SEO + AI Search Checkup for Your Business
Search Has Changed: A 10-Point SEO + AI Search Checkup for Your Business
Part 2 of the 12-Part Southwest Florida Business Digital Marketing Series
In Part One, we looked at whether your website is actually working for your business. Now comes the next question: can potential customers find it — and can they find it in the places they are searching today?
Search is changing quickly. Traditional Google rankings still matter, but customers are also seeing AI-generated answers, maps, videos, forums, and other sources before reaching the familiar list of website links. Tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini are also becoming part of how people research and compare businesses.
That does not mean SEO is dead. It means SEO is expanding. Your website still needs to be technically sound, useful, authoritative, and easy for search engines to understand — while also being clear and credible enough for AI-powered systems to understand and potentially reference.
The goal is no longer to ask only, "Where do we rank?" The better question is: "Are we visible wherever our customers are searching?"
Start with these 10 questions.
1. Do You Know What Your Customers Are Actually Searching For?
SEO starts with customer language. The terms your team uses may not be the terms customers type into Google.
Identify your highest-value services, locations, and common customer questions. Compare that language with your website.
Quick Check: Search for the five services you most want to sell using the words a customer would probably use. Does your website have a strong page that matches each search?
2. Does Every Important Service Have a Dedicated Page?
If a service matters to your business, it usually deserves its own page explaining what it is, who it is for, the problem it solves, where it is available, and what the customer should do next.
3. Are Your Page Titles and Headings Clear and Specific?
Google and your visitors should quickly understand what each page is about.
A title such as "Solutions" is vague. A title that clearly names the service is stronger. Make each important page specific and easy to understand.
4. Can Google Find and Index Your Important Pages?
Make sure important pages are easy to reach, broken links and old URLs are addressed, and Google Search Console is connected so you can see whether key pages are being discovered and indexed.
5. Is Your Content Useful for Traditional Search AND AI Search?
Search visibility now extends beyond traditional blue links. Your content may also influence AI-generated answers and recommendations.
Strong pages should explain services clearly, answer real questions, demonstrate expertise, and support claims with evidence. FAQs, case studies, local examples, original media, expert commentary, and useful data can help both people and AI-powered systems understand your business.
6. Are Your Internal Links Helping People and Search Engines?
Internal links help visitors discover related information and help search engines understand how your pages fit together.
Link your homepage to major services, service pages to related services, articles to the services they discuss, and location pages to the services available there.
7. Does Your Website Clearly Show Where You Do Business?
For local and regional companies, geography matters.
If you serve multiple Southwest Florida communities, make that clear through service-area information, useful city pages, local examples, FAQs, or service pages.
Avoid simply copying one location page and swapping the city name.
8. Is Your Business Building Authority Beyond Its Own Website?
Relevant links and mentions from chambers, associations, local media, industry publications, partners, directories, and community organizations can strengthen credibility.
The goal is not hundreds of random backlinks. Relevance and quality matter more than quantity.
9. Are You Using Google Search Console?
You can see queries, pages receiving impressions and clicks, click-through rates, average positions, and indexing issues.
Look for pages with strong impressions but relatively few clicks. Those may offer opportunities to improve titles, descriptions, content, or relevance.
10. Are You Measuring Search Visibility Beyond Rankings Alone?
Track rankings and organic traffic, but also watch branded search, referral traffic, source mentions, AI visibility where measurable, and conversions such as calls, forms, appointments, quote requests, purchases, or registrations.
A ranking, mention, or AI citation only matters if it helps the right customer discover, understand, trust, or choose your business.
Bonus Tip: Stop Obsessing Over One Keyword
Business owners often ask, "Where do we rank for this keyword?" But customers rarely search with only one phrase, and results vary.
Instead, evaluate groups of related searches. Are impressions and organic visits growing? Are more relevant pages appearing? Are those visits producing conversions?
