Florida Expands Access to Workforce Pell Grants

On July 1, 2026, a new federal program called Workforce Pell is opened the door to Pell Grant funding for short-term, career-focused training. For the first time, students can use federal financial aid to pay for fast-track credential programs that lead directly into high-skill, high-wage, in-demand jobs. 

For our members, this is a direct pipeline for workforce opportunities. Adding to this momentum, Governor DeSantis announced Florida’s initial list of state-eligible workforce Programs on September 17.  

What kinds of programs qualify? 
Florida's current approved list spans a wide range of fields our members hire in every day, including: 

• Skilled trades & manufacturing: CNC machinist/fabricator, welding and fabrication, electronics, robotics, automation, CAD 

• Healthcare: EMT, phlebotomy, medical laboratory assisting, patient care assistant, nursing assistant 

• Public safety: Firefighter, correctional and law enforcement basic training, telecommunications 

• Transportation & logistics: Commercial vehicle driving (Class A & B) 

• Business & technology: Digital marketing, project management, database administration, accounting technology, entrepreneurship 

• Energy & utilities: Solar energy technician, electrical lineworker fundamentals, water/wastewater treatment 

Many of these programs run in a matter of weeks or months with clear career pathways.

• A stronger, faster-moving talent pipeline. Short-term credentialing means local employers have access to trained candidates sooner. 

• Lower barriers for career-changers. Workers without a four-year degree now have a federally funded path into skilled, better-paying roles. 

• Alignment with real labor market needs. Programs are tied to Florida's workforce priority occupations, so training reflects what businesses are actively hiring for.

We encourage members who partner with local training providers, technical colleges, or workforce boards to tune in.
